What Is a Dental Emergency
A dental emergency is any injury or oral health change that puts your teeth and gums at risk. Pain, as with a toothache, is always a dental emergency. Toothache pain indicates an infection or oral health issue that should be addressed immediately.
Examples of dental emergencies may include but are not limited to:
- Toothaches or growing sensitivity
- Jaw or facial swelling
- Tooth discoloration
- Oral injuries
- Broken or lost tooth/restoration
A minor chip or crack may not be a dental emergency and can usually wait until the next available appointment. However, if you have pain and/or swelling with this chip or crack, I’d like to see you as soon as possible.
Lowering Your Dental Emergency Risks
The most common dental emergency is a tooth root infection. See me every six months for comprehensive exams and teeth cleanings to lower your risks for these painful infections. Additionally, adopt and implement an excellent oral care routine daily. Ideally, you should brush and floss after every meal. If this is difficult or impossible, try brushing twice daily (once before bed) and flossing once.
To avoid oral injuries, always wear a mouthguard when playing sports.
Finally, if you notice changes to your oral health, including tooth sensitivity, contact my dental office to discuss your symptoms with a knowledgeable team member.
