Who Should Not Get a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are the gold standard for tooth replacements. Dental implants look completely natural, and they also restore your ability to bite and chew food. When you have one or more missing teeth, it can also make it difficult to pronounce words clearly and socialize confidently. Though dental implants work for some people, they’re not ideal for all patients. Here’s a list of people who may not be good candidates for dental implants.

1. Children and Teens

Children and teens should not receive dental implants because their jaws are still developing. Girls’ jaws continue to grow until age 16-17 and 18-19 for boys. Surgically inserting a dental implant can disrupt a young person’s jaw growth and bite alignment. If a young person loses a tooth, they can use a dental bridge or temporary crown or wait until their jaws are developed to get an implant.

2. Smokers and Tobacco Chewers

Most dentists won’t recommend dental implants for people who use tobacco products or smoke cigarettes. Tobacco products contain harmful chemicals, hinder blood supply to the jaw, and inhibit the body’s ability to heal.

3. People Who Aren’t Committed to Their Oral Health

Poor oral hygiene is one of the significant reasons many adults have tooth loss. Dental implants are designed to replace missing teeth, but if a patient isn’t committed to improving their oral hygiene or caring for their smile, they may not be a good candidate for dental implants. Dental implants cannot acquire tooth decay, but the surrounding teeth and gums can become diseased if not cared for properly.

4. The Very Elderly or Those with Chronic Illnesses

The very elderly (over age 85) or those with chronic illnesses may not be good candidates for dental implants. Older patients or patients with certain conditions may have a higher risk of infection or incomplete healing. However, if a patient—at any age—is in excellent health, they may be a candidate for dental implants.
