In the event of tooth loss or structural weakness due to decay or injury, in the interest of retaining facial structure and the strength and integrity of a person’s bite, protecting the site of the damaged tooth or teeth is paramount. Dental crowns are a very popular and highly effective long-term dental restorations that achieve these very goals.

Today, we’re discussing dental crowns – what they are, the different types of dental crowns, their expected lifespans, and tips for ensuring that your crowns last as long as possible.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap designed to fit snugly over a severely decayed tooth, after a root canal, or following the placement of a dental implant. Crowns provide protection for damaged teeth while restoring their natural shape and biting and chewing functionality. Additionally, crowns are effective at restoring the aesthetic appeal of a patient’s smile.

Though crowns are excellent long-term restorations, they do not last forever. Fortunately, with proper care, we can push the need for retreatment well into the future!

How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

The longevity of a dental crown varies (as does its aesthetics) based on the material from which they're made. Here is a look at the lifespans (assuming proper care) of different types of crowns:

  • Porcelain – 5-15 years
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns – 10-15 years
  • Ceramic or Zirconia – 15-20 years
  • Durable metals like gold or silver – 15-30 years

Maximizing the Lifespan of Dental Crowns

Here are a few to help you maximize the longevity of dental crowns:

  • Practice Good Oral Hygiene – Brush and floss at least twice daily to prevent plaque buildup.
  • Avoid Biting Down on Hard Items – Avoid biting down on olive pits, unpopped popcorn kernels, and pen caps.
  • Use a mouthguard – If you grind your teeth during slumber or play contact sports, wear a mouthguard to minimize wear and tear.
  • Address Bruxism – If you have bruxism (excessive tooth clenching/grinding), ask your dentist about treatments for the issue.
  • Schedule regular dental checkups to ensure your crowns are in good shape and free of any potential issues.
